There are many ways to motivate Readers. One way I have found is by having children act things out. It is fun to act out a part of a story and have others guess the part of story. Sometimes students may want to dress up. Just bringing some old clothes works just fine.
One of my classes acted out the signing of "The Declaration of Independence." We made a paper wig and a pen with a feather on it. We also made a document to sign. It was a scroll. Thomas Jefferson would've laughed. They had so much fun and I think this helped them remember that famous event.
I saw one teacher do something really neat. He had a reading day. Everyone dressed like a charater in a book. They read all day having popcorn and other snacks. I think the children loved it.
Another time my class wrote a play and they voted on the best one. Then they acted it out with puppets and stuffed animals. Chilren love to act parts out. They can really use their imagination.
One class also acted out the Civil War. We had just read about it. We had about a five minute battle. They were very excited about it, however. We moved the desks over and went at it.
